元彼が忘れられないのは、なぜか
何年も引きずるのは、あの恋が特別だったから。その説明は、研究が測ってきた変数とずれている。
別れると「自分が誰か」の輪郭がぼやけ、ぼやけているほど苦痛が強い。引きずりやすさと関係していたのは相手の特別さではなく、その関係が自分の中で占めていた場所の大きさ。回復を説明していたのは時間そのものより、自分の輪郭が戻ることだった。

研究の答え
付き合っているあいだ、人は相手と友人や習慣を共有し、自分の中身が相手と重なっていきます。だから関係が終わると、自分の一部が抜けます。
3つの研究で、別れたあとに自己概念の中身が変わり、「自分が誰か」の明確さが下がること、そして明確さが下がっているほど苦痛が強いことが、他の要因とは別に示されました。
別れて半年以内の155名では、別れのあとの成長と前向きな感情は、その関係が自分をどれだけ広げていたかと関係していました。広げる度合いが低かった関係ほど、自分を取り戻す感覚が強く、自分を失った感覚が少なかった。引きずりやすさと関係していたのは、相手の特別さではなく、関係が自分の中で占めていた場所の大きさです。
210名を9週間追った研究では、別れについて繰り返し語る測定を受けた群で自己概念の乱れが大きく減り、その改善が、記憶の侵入・孤独感・「私たち」という語の減少を説明していました。介入は相手を忘れる訓練でも新しい恋でもありません。
逆向きの関連もあります。元の相手との接触は愛情と悲しみの減りを遅らせ、SNSの閲覧は苦痛と渇望の強さと関連していました。

横断的な研究が中心で、苦痛が輪郭をぼやけさせる向きも排除されていません。
割付のある研究でも、効果は自己概念の指標を通したものに限られ、他の指標には群の差がありませんでした。
これは「相手は特別ではなかった」と言う研究ではありません。特別だったという感覚が、回復を説明する変数として測られていない、という話です。
